Q: Why did you choose to pursue a career in healthcare?
I choose to pursue a career in healthcare because I wanted to be able to empower patients and assist them in their health and wellness journey. DOs take into account and incorporate the social, psychological, and cultural aspects in the context of healthcare. I want to help people in a holistic approach, go beyond treating the disease to take an active role in a patient's life and care for the whole person: promote lifestyle changes, health education, and integrate preventative health.
Q: What did you do during your growth year(s) and what did you learn?
During my growth years, I worked in research, healthcare, and higher education. In research, I learned hands-on laboratory techniques related to molecular biology. I developed an intellectual curiosity and scientific inquiry. I was a Success Advisor and I learned to assist others like me to succeed as low-income, first-generation, immigrant, and underrepresented students in a STEM field. I provided support, listened to, and guided students to solutions, and helped them reach their goals. I was also an Area Coordinator and oversaw residential colleges. I learned responsibility and accountability by caring for the well-being of over 500 students. I gained an aptitude for leadership, reliability, and teamwork.
Q: What are some ways that you take care of your mental health and overall wellbeing?
My hobbies include traveling, cooking, reading fiction books, and spending quality time with family and friends.
